Sustainable rail in action: conversion of the Hengelo marshalling yard
Commissioned by Dura Vermeer Rail Infra, Heatpoint is contributing to the conversion of the points heating system at the Hengelo marshalling yard.
Here, we are converting the points heating system from gas to electricity, which is more sustainable. This step is part of a wider sustainability drive by ProRail, which aims to make the rail network fossil-free and future-proof.
What else is being done?
Removal of nine points and 1,200 metres of redundant track
Conversion from gas-fired to electric point heating
Renewal of overhead lines and tracks
Why is this important?
Electric point heating is not only more energy-efficient, but also better for the environment. By switching from gas to green electricity from renewable sources such as wind and solar power, CO₂ emissions are significantly reduced and maintenance is simplified. With this project, we are contributing to a more sustainable and reliable railway and, together with Dura Vermeer Railinfra B.V. and ProRaileen, we are taking an important step towards a fossil-free future.
