In practice, point heating consumes a significant amount of energy. Without insulation, a large portion of this heat is lost through the outer and underside of the stock rail and the switch blade. This loss is heavily influenced by wind and precipitation, and it does not contribute to the availability of the switch—it merely drives up costs.
