BlueWire: The permanent solution for ice-free overhead lines

Prevent costly disruptions and delays in your timetable caused by ice and frost formation on the overhead lines. Ice on the contact wire causes trains and trams to lose power, and in extreme cases, can even lead to overhead line breakage due to the heavy weight of the ice layer. Heatpoint’s BlueWire is an innovative heating system powered directly by the overhead line itself (500V to 1200V). This ensures you are always prepared for wintry conditions, guaranteeing that your vehicles can depart from the depot on time, every morning.

The benefits of the BlueWire system

Our advanced system is developed to maximize the reliability of your network and reduce operational costs:

  • Save on labor and equipment: You reduce the need for costly nighttime emergency crews and specialized mechanical ice-removal vehicles.
  • Protect your rolling stock: The presence of ice causes arcing, leading to excessive wear on the current collectors (pantographs). BlueWire prevents this and significantly extends the service life of your rolling stock.
  • Direct power supply via overhead line: The system draws its power directly from the existing network (OHL), making complex external power supplies unnecessary.
  • Environmentally friendly and safe: It is a 100% chemical-free solution that requires no additional personnel.
  • Fully automated: The control system operates completely automatically via smart sensors or can be controlled manually from a distance.

Ideal for critical sections

BlueWire is the perfect solution for vulnerable locations within your rail infrastructure where ice formation poses a major risk:

- Yards and Depots

Ice often accumulates overnight. BlueWire ensures that your vehicles can depart without any issues in the morning.

- Tunnels and Bridges

Where moist, relatively warm air (such as from tunnel ventilation or river air) meets the cold outdoor environment, frost or ice quickly forms on the contact wire.

- Sections along lakes and rivers

Prevents ice formation caused by condensation and temperature differences near large bodies of water.

- High-altitude sections

On hilly routes, temperatures drop more rapidly. Ice on the contact wire reduces power exactly when the vehicle needs the most traction.

Innovative Cable Technology

The BlueWire heating cable is designed for maximum heat transfer and seamless installation in the overhead contact line:

  • Unique Triangular Shape: The cable features a triangular design, ensuring excellent thermal contact and easy installation on top of the contact wire.
  • Rapid Results: At a temperature of -5°C and with biting wind, the contact wire is above freezing and completely ice-free within just 5 minutes.
  • High-Quality Materials: The cable features twisted metal heating wires, UV-resistant TPE material for optimal heat transfer, safe silicone insulation, and a fiberglass sheath for mechanical stability.
  • - Safe Installation: The system is secured with special phosphor bronze clips to prevent galvanic corrosion.

Intelligent Control and SCADA Monitoring

The BlueWire system is supplied with advanced controllers (BW-500-MS) and intuitive SCADA software.

Smart Controllers

Available for line sections (2 to 4 heating circuits) or large depots (up to 12 circuits per unit). The controllers operate in an automated mode based on weather forecasts, air temperature, and humidity.

Full Control

Through the (cloud or on-premise) SCADA system, you can manage the installation remotely. You can switch individual circuits on and off, analyze energy consumption, and receive instant notifications in case of anomalies such as communication errors or changes in cable resistance.
