ContactSustainable Rail in Action: Conversion at Hengelo Yard
Commissioned by Dura Vermeer Rail Infra, Heatpoint is contributing to the conversion of the switch heating systems at Hengelo yard.
Here, we’re converting the switch heating from gas to electric — a more sustainable solution. This step is part of a broader sustainability initiative by ProRail to make the rail network fossil-free and future-proof.
What else is being done?
Why is this important?
Electric switch heating is not only more energy-efficient but also better for the environment. By switching from gas to green electricity sourced from wind and solar power, CO₂ emissions are significantly reduced and maintenance becomes easier.
Through this project, we are contributing to a more sustainable and reliable railway system, taking an important step — together with Dura Vermeer Railinfra B.V. and ProRail — towards a fossil-free future.

Point heating keeps railway points free of snow and ice. Heatpoint uses different heating methods, depending on prevailing weather conditions and existing infrastructure. These include gas heating (infrared radiation), electric heating (resistance strip elements) and liquid heating (using a CH boiler or ground heat).

The MAX cable duct is a robust and highly durable duct which Heatpoint designed specifically for railways. These ducts protect vulnerable cables and pipes from vandalism and other forms of abuse or heavy loads.
